The story behind the Rip Rod
The Rip Rod from 2016 stands out as a unique addition to the Hot Wheels lineup because it bridges two popular categories in one model. Designed by Fraser Campbell and Alton Takeyasu, this futuristic race car was part of the HW Glow Wheels series but also earned special status as a Treasure Hunt. Finding a Treasure Hunt requires patience since these models are hidden randomly within standard Mainline cases. The Rip Rod features aggressive styling with a black body shell that contrasts sharply against its bright blue metal base and yellow accents on the front bumper and windows.
Materials, colors and value
This model comes in 1/64 scale, which is the classic size for most Hot Wheels collectibles. The construction uses a sturdy metal chassis painted in metallic blue to support the plastic body components. The car features distinctive white wheels with yellow rims that match the window details perfectly. Inside, you can spot light blue interior parts that add depth to the cabin design. Because it holds Treasure Hunt status, this item is much more valuable than standard releases from 2016 and is often sought after by collectors who want complete sets of special editions.
Questions about the Rip Rod
Is the 2016 Rip Rod a regular car or rare?+
The 2016 Rip Rod is considered rare because it carries Treasure Hunt status. Unlike standard Mainline models that appear frequently in stores, these cars are hidden inside cases at lower rates. This makes them significantly harder to find and usually more valuable on the secondary market than common issues from the same year.
How do I know if my Rip Rod is real?+
Look closely at the base of your car for a small flame logo printed near the rear wheels. This symbol indicates it is an official Treasure Hunt model. Additionally, check that the body matches the specific color scheme described above with black paint over a blue metal frame and yellow window details.
What series does this Hot Wheels car belong to?+
This vehicle belongs to both the Mainline assortment and the HW Glow Wheels sub-series from 2016. The glow wheels theme typically features translucent or brightly colored tires, though as a special Treasure Hunt variant, it has unique detailing that sets it apart from standard versions of this design.
