The story behind the '68 Mercury Cougar
The 68 Mercury Cougar from the 2021 HW Flames series represents a special moment in Hot Wheels history. Unlike standard Mainline releases found in everyday packaging, this model carries the prestigious Super Treasure Hunt designation. These vehicles are extremely rare and highly sought after by serious collectors due to their unique paint finishes and limited availability during that specific release year. Designed by Rob Matthes under SKU GTD02, this diecast car captures classic American muscle with a modern twist.
Materials, colors and value
This model features the iconic Spectraflame finish in Dark Green paired with custom flame graphics on its bodywork. The base utilizes ZAMAC metal and chrome details to add premium weight and visual contrast against the vibrant paint job. At a standard 1/64 scale, it sits perfectly alongside other collection pieces while standing out due to its exclusive treatment. Because Super Treasure Hunt items are produced in significantly smaller quantities than regular cars, finding one can be challenging for enthusiasts.
Questions about the '68 Mercury Cougar
How do I know if my Hot Wheels car is a Super Treasure Hunt?+
Look closely at the base or packaging of your model. Genuine Super Treasure Hunts display distinct Spectraflame paint that shines like glass under light. They also feature unique wheel types not found on common versions and usually include special flame logos printed directly onto the chassis near the wheels to identify them as rare variants.
What makes a 2021 HW Flames car valuable?+
Value depends heavily on rarity and condition. While many cars in this series were common, specific models like Super Treasure Hunts command much higher prices due to scarcity. Collectors pay more for pristine examples with original packaging intact because finding these limited runs years after their initial release becomes increasingly difficult over time.
Is the 68 Mercury Cougar hard to find?+
Yes, particularly if it is a Super Treasure Hunt version. These special models were hidden randomly among standard packs during production runs without prior announcement. Since they did not appear every year or in large numbers, locating an unopened example today requires checking secondary markets carefully where verified sellers list authentic finds.
