The story behind the '99 Honda Civic Type R (EK9)
The '99 Honda Civic Type R EK9 holds a special place in automotive history as a high performance compact hatchback from Japan. This specific Hot Wheels model captured that spirit perfectly when it launched as part of the HW Hatchbacks series in 2022. Designed by Ryu Asada, this diecast version is not just a standard release but belongs to the elite Super Treasure Hunt category. These releases are famous for their unique metallic Spectraflame finishes and special wheels that stand out instantly on any shelf or display case.
Materials, colors and value
This car features a striking body finished in shimmering Spectraflame Sunlight Yellow paint over a plastic base. The interior is detailed with vibrant red seats visible through tinted gray windows, matching the sporty aesthetic of the original vehicle. It sits at the standard 1/64 scale typical for most retail Hot Wheels cars but commands significantly more attention due to its exclusive status. Collectors often look closely at the special wheels and paint finish to confirm authenticity.
Questions about the '99 Honda Civic Type R (EK9)
How can I tell if my Civic Type R is a Super Treasure Hunt?+
Look for two specific details that separate this version from standard releases. The most obvious feature is the Spectraflame paint finish on the body, which has a distinct metallic shimmer rather than flat color. Additionally, these models come with unique wheel designs not found in regular packs.
Is it normal for Hot Wheels to use plastic instead of metal?+
Yes, this is completely standard practice nowadays. While early cars were mostly made of diecast zinc alloy metal bodies, many modern Mainline models feature fully painted or unpainted plastic shells to reduce weight and manufacturing costs without losing visual detail.
How much is a 2022 Super Treasure Hunt worth today?+
Values vary greatly depending on condition. Unopened cards typically sell for higher prices because they preserve the original packaging quality perfectly. Loose cars with minor damage to paint or plastic bases usually command lower amounts, though their rarity still adds significant appeal.
