The story behind the McLaren 720S
This McLaren 720S represents a fascinating experiment in how Hot Wheels engaged with digital culture during the early days of non-fungible tokens. Released in 2024 as part of the NFT Virtual Garage, this model was designed to bridge the gap between physical diecast and virtual ownership. It belongs to Series 8 Main Series and carries the SKU HXN08. While it shares some production DNA with standard releases, its connection to a specific digital collection makes it unique in the timeline of Mattel products. Fans view these cars as historical artifacts from when brands first tried to link physical toys with blockchain technology.
Materials, colors and value
The body is made of ZAMAC metal and features an unpainted finish that highlights the raw diecast material rather than a traditional paint scheme. This metallic silver look pairs with black interior details, smoke tinted windows, and a solid black base. Ryu Asada designed this version to match its specific virtual counterpart. Collectors interested in digital release history often seek these out because they were not sold on standard retail shelves like typical Mainline cars.
Questions about the McLaren 720S
Is the Hot Wheels NFT Virtual Garage McLaren a real physical car?+
Yes, this is an actual 1/64 scale diecast model. It was produced by Mattel to serve as a physical companion for buyers who purchased digital tokens during that specific promotional period in 2024.
What does the unpainted ZAMAC finish mean?+
Unpainted means the body retains its natural metallic zinc alloy texture without colored paint. This gives it a raw industrial silver appearance that looks very different from standard glossy red or blue Hot Wheels.
How rare is this specific 2024 release?+
These models were distributed as part of the NFT Virtual Garage campaign rather than through normal retail channels. This limited distribution method makes them harder to find on standard store shelves today compared to regular Mainline releases.
