The story behind the Datsun 620
The Datsun 620 brings a distinct flavor to the Hot Wheels lineup as part of the 2023 Pop Culture Vintage Oil series. This collection focuses heavily on racing heritage, and this specific model captures that spirit with bold red paintwork and prominent white graphics. Designed by Jun Imai, it stands out in its category for having a metal body rather than plastic, which gives it extra weight and durability compared to standard mainline cars. While the Pop Culture line usually highlights movie or TV themes, the Vintage Oil sub-series leans into classic automotive branding and sponsor logos that define a certain era of motorsport. For collectors who enjoy the gritty aesthetic of vintage rally trucks mixed with modern diecast engineering, this 2023 release offers a nice balance of style and substance.
Materials, colors and value
Crafted from metal at a standard 1/64 scale, the Datsun 620 features a striking red body paired with black base components. The interior is finished in black to match the smoke tinted windows that add depth to the cabin view. Because it belongs to a specialized Pop Culture series rather than the general Mainline range, its value often depends on how much you appreciate vintage racing themes within your personal collection. These models are generally accessible at retail but can command slightly higher prices among niche enthusiasts who track specific design aesthetics and brand collaborations.
Questions about the Datsun 620
Is the Datsun 620 Hot Wheels a limited edition model?+
No, this is not a Treasure Hunt or Super Treasure Hunt. It is part of the standard Pop Culture Vintage Oil assortment for 2023. This means it was produced in regular retail quantities and does not have special flame logos or Spectraflame paint that mark rare chase variants.
What makes this Datsun different from a normal Mainline car?+
The biggest difference is the construction. While most mainline trucks are made entirely of plastic, this model features a metal body for better durability and weight. It also carries specific pop culture branding related to vintage oil companies that sets it apart from generic vehicle releases.
How can I identify if my Datsun 620 is the correct version?+
Look at the base of the car where you will find the SKU HKC99. You should also verify that the body has red paint with white sponsor graphics and that it features a metal chassis rather than an all-plastic build typical of lower-tier releases.
